Service to others was a common theme Saturday at the Founders Day celebration of Kappa Alpha chapter of Phi Tau Omega sorority at Iolas Riverside Park.
The local sorority hosted 78 guests from across eastern Kansas, and beyond, to celebrate their 93-year history.
The national PTO platform is Feeding the Hungry.
Locally, Kappa Alpha hosts fundraisers and donates money on a monthly basis to several area groups, including the Iola Community Pantry, backpacks for children, including giving food to under-privileged youth each weekend, Hope Unlimited, Pregnancy Resource Center, the Allen County Animal Rescue Facility and an autism awareness group.
Other local endeavors by members include making and serving meals at the Iola First Presbyterian Churchs Sunday Soups events; donating packages of new socks and underwear to schools throughout Allen County, and making hygiene bags for all fourth-graders in USD 257.
Kappa Alpha also donates $100 gas cards to area residents who must travel to undergo cancer treatment.
Most people in the area dont even know Kappa Alpha exists, but we do mighty works of philanthropy, chapter member Barbara Anderson noted.
Kappa Alpha members will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the national PTO convention in June.
